Refinish Your Own Bathtub and Save Money

In these tough economic times, one of the best ways to save money on your home improvement projects is to do it yourself. If the bathroom is one of those rooms you’ve been dreaming about improving but you don’t have the budget to replace the fixtures and hire professionals to install them, you can try to tackle some of the projects yourself! It’s easier than you think, and one of the best ways to turn your bathroom around is to do a bathtub refinishing project yourself.

Refinishing a bathtub is not the easiest task, but if you keep your beautiful new looking bathtub end goal in mind, it will help you get the hardest part. The hardest part is sanding the old finish off and any of the imperfections, which should only take a few hours if you really stay focused and don’t get sidetracked. Before you begin your bathtub refinishing, make sure to get all the proper materials. Place dropcloths down and mask the floor and fixtures around your bathtub, so that you can keep the mess away from the rest of your bathroom. You will be sanding and spraying, so you want to make sure you properly cover everything so that the only thing that gets a refinish is your bathtub!

After you finish the careful preparation and sand off the old top coat on your tub, you can get to the more fun stuff. You will want to make sure to sand out the old blemishes and the nicks, and fill the holes so that you have a totally smooth and “like new” surface to work with. After smoothing the old surface out, you will then put a coat of primer on, then seal the tub and essentially “re-paint” your tub with a final glossy top coat for bathroom fixtures. Make sure to wait the instructed time between each coat of primer, sealant and top coat before you put further coats on or use. When the last top coat has dried completely, you can start enjoying your new tub right away.

You’ll be amazed at how much better your bathroom looks when you refinish your bathtub and make it look like new again. Make sure you have this home improvement project all planned out and know exactly how to tackle it before you begin, and you can have a new bathtub after one weekend!
