Maintaining Your Walk-In Bathtub

If you want your furniture to last you for a lifetime, it is absolutely crucial that you take good care of it. The walk-in bathtub is a variety of bathtubs that cater to those with physical difficulties and desperately needed an alternative to the conventional tub. For this reason, walk-in bathtubs are more than just a beautiful furniture piece; they are instrumental in achieving mobility for a lot of people.

Keeping your walk in tub in tip-top condition is not difficult but it does require some attention. You can’t just give it a wipe down once a year. You have to be more careful about it. In addition, there are different ways to maintain your walk-in bathtub depending on the size and make. Here are some pointers organized according to each category:

1. Fiberglass: The nature of fiberglass is incredibly porous so that means that soap scum, mildew and mold can lodge into the pores over time and get stuck. This not only makes it an undesirable space to take a bath in but it’s incredibly difficult to clean as well. Because the stains are so hard to remove, you will end up on your hands and knees scrubbing the surface. This will eventually wear down the gel coat in the walk-in bathtub and expose the primary finish. Prevent it all together by spraying a cleaning solution like Tilex or Lysol to not keep it spot-free and glossy.

2. Acrylic: Unlike fiberglass, acrylic is non-porous and resistant to mold and mildew. The residue stays on the surface and doesn’t penetrate past to hard-to-reach places. When you do have to give your bathtub a routine cleaning, you only have to wipe down gently. No matter how hard you scrub, the acrylic doesn’t lose any of its durable surface or resilient color. If you can, try to buy a walk-in bathtub that is made out of acrylic because it doesn’t require as much maintenance.
